Chartered Financial Administrator and Tax Practitioner

CIBA: 2025080-1637
Tax Practitioner: PR-0122022

I am a Chartered Financial Administrator and registered Tax Practitioner with over five years' experience in accounting, taxation, and audit, supported by SAICA training and my CIBA membership, as well as a legal background through my LL.B (cum laude). My experience spans financial statements, tax compliance for individuals, companies and trusts, contract drafting, and the administration of trusts and deceased estates. I particularly enjoy the problem-solving aspect of accounting, where I can take complex financial and legal matters and translate them into clear, practical outcomes that add real value to my clients.

Leani Venter

Director

Chartered Accountant (SA) and Tax Practitioner

SAICA: 20053224
Tax Practitioner: PR-0096797

I obtained my BAccounting degree, BCom Honours in Management Accounting and BAccounting Honours from the University of Stellenbosch. After completing my audit articles, I was admitted as a Chartered Accountant (SA) with SAICA in 2021. I subsequently held the role of Technical Assurance Manager, remaining actively engaged with developments in the audit and financial reporting landscape. While completing my articles, I met my business partner Jadé, and our shared commitment to continuous learning and strong work ethic led us to establish Mosaic Accounting and Taxation together.

Frequently Asked Questions

When are tax returns due in South Africa?
  • Individuals (non-provisional taxpayers): Usually July – October
  • Provisional taxpayers: 1st return: 31 August | 2nd return: End of February | 3rd/top-up (if needed): September
  • Companies: Within 12 months after financial year-end

Exact dates change annually when SARS announces the filing season.

What documents do I need to submit my tax return?
  • IRP5/IT3(a) from your employer
  • Medical aid tax certificate
  • Retirement annuity contribution certificate
  • Travel logbook (if claiming travel expenses)
  • IT3(b) for investment income
  • Proof of other income (rental, freelance, side business)
  • Supporting documents for deductions (donations, home office, etc.)
Do I need to submit supporting documents to SARS?

Not always. In most cases, you don't upload documents immediately — SARS may request verification later. You must keep records for at least 5 years.

What happens if I miss the tax deadline?

You may face:

  • Administrative penalties (monthly fines)
  • Interest on outstanding tax
  • Possible non-compliance status

It's always better to file late than not at all.

Who qualifies as a provisional taxpayer?

You are a provisional taxpayer if you earn income other than a salary, such as:

  • Freelancers / consultants
  • Rental income earners
  • Business owners
  • Commission earners
What is auto-assessment from SARS?

SARS may issue an auto-assessment based on third-party data. If it's correct, accept it. If incorrect, edit and resubmit your return.

Can I claim deductions to reduce my tax?

Yes, depending on your situation. Common deductions include:

  • Retirement annuities
  • Medical expenses (above thresholds)
  • Travel expenses (if applicable)
  • Home office (strict criteria)
  • Donations to approved PBOs
How long does a refund take?

Typically 3–7 working days. Delays can happen if verification is required or banking details need confirmation.

Do I need to submit a tax return if I earn below the threshold?

Not always. You may not need to file if you earn below the annual threshold, have only one employer, and no additional income or deductions. But it's always best to confirm — many people still benefit from submitting.

How can I make tax season easier?
  • Keep documents monthly
  • Use cloud accounting software
  • Separate business and personal finances
  • Work with a registered tax practitioner
